Brain activity is monitored in functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Here, excitation and inhibition can be measured using the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal. A positive BOLD signal is correlated to excitatory postsynaptic activation of neurons, while a negative BOLD signal is assumed to be correlated to inhibitory postsynaptic activity. The underlying nature is currently unknown. The project will investigate the mechanism of the negative BOLD signal in humans, using the somatosensory system as a model.
